Medicare & Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs

ehr providersThe HITECH Act, which was signed into law in 2009, tasked the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) with the job of creating an EHR Certification Program. Meanwhile, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is responsible for overseeing the EHR Incentive Programs, which provide incentive payments to eligible healthcare providers and hospitals who meet Meaningful Use. "Meaningful use" refers to using certified EHR technology in ways that meet measurement thresholds established by CMS.

Eligible hospitals and healthcare providers may participate in one of the following programs:

Medicare EHR Incentive Program

Eligible professionals can receive up to $44,000 over five years under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. However, to qualify for the maximum payment, Medicare eligible professionals must have begun participation by 2012.

Medicaid EHR Incentive Program

The Medicaid EHR Incentive Program is offered by more than 40 individual states and territories across the United States. Eligible professionals who participate in the program can receive up to $63,750 over six years. For more information about eligibility and participation requirements, check with your state's Medicaid Agency.
